EA knocks itself off the top spot

29/Dec/2003
‘Need for Speed: Underground’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC) from EA overtakes EA’s ‘Medal of Honor: Rising Sun’ (PS2/XB/GC) which falls to No2, to claim the No1 spot for the last week of the year.

EA’s ‘FIFA 2004’ (PS2/PSX/GC/GBA/XB/PC/NG) moves up from No4 to No3 ahead of Vivendi’s ‘The Simpsons: Hit and Run’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC) which drops from No3 to No4. After being denied last week by Vivendi, EA once again have all Top 3 titles in the All Formats Chart, but with ‘Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup’ (PS2/GBA/PC/GC) falling out of the Top 10 from No9 to No13, EA now have 5 rather than 6 Top 10 titles. However, 65% of the total unit sales from the Top 10 All Formats titles are attributed to EA, compared to a similar figure of 68% last week. ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ consolidates its position at No5 with strong sales, while ‘Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ (PS2/XB/GBA) re-enters the Top 40 due partly to the cinema release of the last instalment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. 2 other titles re-enter the Top 40 All Formats Charts thanks in the most part to retailer Christmas sale promotions: Eidos’ ‘Hitman 2: Silent Assassin’ (PS2/XB) re-enters at No34, while EA/Nintendo/Namco’s ‘SoulCalibur II’ (PS2/XB/GC) re-enters at No38. The highest climbers this week are EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004’ (PS2/XB/PC/GBA) which is up 11 places from No27 to No14 and Ubisoft’s ‘XIII’ (PS2/XB/PC/GC), up 8 places from No19 to No11. The ‘Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack’ (PS2/XB) enters the All Formats Chart for the first time this week at No18 thanks to the release of the Xbox version.

EA wishes everyone a wartorn Christmas

22/Dec/2003
EA’s ‘Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun’ (PS2/XB/GC) remains No1 in the All Formats Chart for a fourth week in succession and as such claims the coveted Official Christmas No1, the first time a wargame has held the Christmas Top Spot.

EA demonstrate a stranglehold on this year’s Christmas Top 10, with 6 titles, up from 4 last year which was also a record-breaker as no publisher had ever held more than 3 in the Christmas Chart Week Top 10 (since 1997 as that is when the Overall All Formats Chart was launched). EA remain at No2 with ‘Need For Speed: Underground’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC) but cannot claim the Top 3 as Vivendi have another storming week with ‘The Simpson: Hit & Run’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC) and the title rises another place to claim No3. EA take No4 with ‘FIFA 2004’ (PS2/PSX/GC/GBA/XB/PC and N-Gage, new this week) and also take No5 with ‘Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA/PC). Activision take No’s 6 & 7 for a third week with ‘True Crime: Streets Of LA’ (PS2/XB/GC) and ‘Tony Hawk’s Underground’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA) respectively. EA debut at No8 with PS2/XB/GC/GBA ‘The Sims: Bustin’ Out’ and remain at No9 with PS2/GBA/PC/GC ‘Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup’. Disney/THQ bring up No10 with PS2/XB/GC/GBA/PC ‘Finding Nemo’. Also of note is Universal/Vivendi’s ‘Crash Nitro Kart’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA) which climbs 13 places to take No11 – thanks to some major price promotional activity on the PS2 version. Sony take No12 with PS2 ‘Eye Toy: Play’ whilst Ubisoft climb 9 places to No13 with their big Christmas title, ‘Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time’ (PS2/GBA/PC).

EA only claims top 3 this week

15/Dec/2003
EA’s ‘Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun’ remains No1 in the All Formats Chart for a third week in succession with EA still at No2 and No3 although the titles switch positions - ‘Need For Speed: Underground’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC) is now No2 and the 6 formats of ‘FIFA 2004’ are No3.

Unlike last week however, EA cannot keep the Top 4 as Vivendi’s ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’ (PS2/XB/GBA/PC) enjoys an incredible sales week, leapfrogging EA’s ‘Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King’ to take No4. The aforementioned Tolkien title drops one place to No5, although it will be interesting to see if the release of the film during week 51 will have a marked effect on sales. This week’s big mover is Atari’s PS2/XB/GBA ‘Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines’, up from No34 to No10 and enjoying some strong retailer price promotion. EA enter at No17 with ‘Total Club Manager 2004’ thanks to the new PS2 version which joins the existing PC and Xbox versions.

Friendly fire as EA's Medal of Honor shoots FIFA down to No3

01/Dec/2003
EA knocks its own title off the No1 position in the All Formats Chart this week with ‘Medal of Honor: Rising Sun’ (PS2/XB/GC) grabbing the coveted top spot and pushing the multi-format ‘FIFA 2004’ down to No3.

This is EA’s third different title to make it to No1 in the All Formats Chart in the past 10 weeks as opposed to only the one title, ‘FIFA 2003’ during the same 10 week period in 2002. EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Underground’ (PS2/XB/PC/GC) holds on to the No2 spot, while EA’s ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ (PS2/XBOX/GBA/GC/PC) drops one place from No3 to No4. The only other new entry in the All Formats Top 10 other than ‘Medal of Honor: Rising Sun’ is an Ubisoft title: ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ (PS2/GBA), which debuts at No10. The highest climber is Sony’s ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) which climbs 7 places from No18 to No11 with its highest sales week since its launch 22 weeks ago. Microsoft’s ‘Project Gotham Racing 2’ (XB) debuts this week at No17 in the All Formats Chart, and at No1 in this week’s Xbox Chart ahead of EA’s Xbox version of ‘Medal of Honor: Rising Sun’ which enters at No2. There are 2 other new entries in the All Formats chart this week: Ubisoft’s highly acclaimed cell shaded fps ‘XIII’ (XB/PC/PS2/GC) comes in at No30 and Vivendi’s ‘Crash Nitro Kart’(PS2/GBA/XB/GC) is a new entry at No35.

5-0 to FIFA - EA is top of the table for a fifth week

24/Nov/2003
EA’s multi-format ‘FIFA 2004’ holds on to No1 in the All Formats Chart for a fifth week, whilst EA debut at No2 with ‘Need For Speed: Underground’ (PS2/XB/GC).

EA also take No3, up one place from last week with ‘Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA/PC). Activision’s ‘True Crime: Streets of LA’ (PS2/XB/GC) drops 2 places to No4, even with the addition of the Gamecube version this week. It’s not all bad news for Activision though, as ‘Tony Hawk’s Underground’ is the second highest new entry debuting at No5 (PS2/XB/GC/GBA). The last of this week’s big new entries is Eidos’ PC ‘Championship Manager: Season 03/04’, in at No6. Fox/Vivendi drop one place to No7 with ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’ (PS2/XB/GC/PC), THQ’s PS2 ‘WWE Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain’ suffers a drop of 3 places to No8 and Disney/THQ also move down 2 places to No9 with ‘Finding Nemo’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA/PC). The biggest fall is reserved for Nintendo’s GC ‘Mario Kart: Double Dash!!’, down from No3 to No10.

Mario can't topple FIFA from No1 spot

17/Nov/2003
EA’s ‘FIFA 2004’ holds on to No1 in the All Formats Chart for a fourth week, while Activision’s ‘True Crime: Streets of LA’ (PS2 and Xbox) climbs one place to No2 ahead of this week’s highest new entry: ‘Mario Kart: Double Dash!!’ (Gamecube) at No3.

Despite a large number of new releases, only 5 make it into the All Formats Top 40, 4 of which are sequels. The next highest new entries in the All Formats Chart are EA’s ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC) debuting at No4, followed by Codemasters’ ‘Pop Idol’ (PS2, PC and GBA) which was released last week and enters the chart for the first time at No16. The only other new entries are THQ’s next generation graphic adventure ‘Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon’ (PS2, PC and Xbox) at No23 and finally Atari’s cartoon beat 'em up ‘Dragonball Z: Budokai 2’ (PS2) at No34.

No smackdown for FIFA at No1

10/Nov/2003
EA’s multi-format ‘FIFA 2004’ stays at No1 in the All Formats Chart for a third week (PC and GBA versions are new this week), despite strong competition, particularly from THQ and from Activision.

THQ’s PS2 exclusive ‘WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain’ enters at No2 with the 12th highest sales week ever, higher than last year’s ‘WWE Smackdown! Shut your Mouth’. Activision’s GTA-style title ‘True Crime: Streets of LA’ (PS2 and Xbox) comes in at No3, ahead of Vivendi’s cartoon take on the same GTA title ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’ (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube) which climbs 4 places from No8 to No4. The only other new entry to make it into the Top 10 of the All Formats Chart is Activision’s multiplayer supported ‘Medal of Honor’ clone, ‘Call of Duty’ (PC). There are 4 other new entries in the All Formats Top 40: Lucasarts’ Gamecube exclusive ‘Star Wars: Rebel Strike – Rogue Squadron III’ at No14, Ubisoft’s Xbox Live ‘Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3’ at No15, EA’s ‘Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup’ at No19 and finally Microsoft’s Xbox Live ‘Top Spin’ at No35.

Tiger Woods becomes first ever Golf All Formats No1

06/Oct/2003
EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) becomes the first golf title ever to reach No1 in the All Formats Chart, knocking another EA affiliated title ‘SoulCalibur II’ (Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox) down to No2.

The biggest surprise however, is the performance of 2 titles that were released less than 17 weeks ago: ‘Hulk’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) from Vivendi storms back into the All Formats Top 40 at No3, while Sony’s ‘Formula One 2003’ (PS2) re-enters at No4, both thanks to retailer promotion with the newly priced PS2 console. The new entries this week are all from THQ: ‘WWE Raw 2’ (Xbox) at No19, ‘Finding Nemo’ (PS2, GBA, PC and Xbox) at No20 and ‘WWE Wrestlemania XIX’ (Gamecube) at No27.

Conflict: Desert Storm II gives SCI their first No1 since the original

22/Sep/2003
‘Conflict: Desert Storm II’ (PS2, Xbox and PC) from SCI fights off strong competition to come in at No1 this week exactly a year after the original title reached the same position.

‘Colin McRae Rally 04’ (PS2 and Xbox) from Codemasters is a new entry at No2, pushing last week’s No1 ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ (Xbox) from Lucasarts down to No3. There are a total of 4 new entries in the All Formats Top 10 this week with an impressive debut for EA’s ‘Rugby 2004’ at No4, pushing Sony’s ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) down from No2 to No5. The other new entry in the All Formats Top 10 is the Lucasarts/Activision title ‘Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Jedi Academy’ (PC) which comes in at No6. The highest climber in the Top 20 this week is Eidos’ ‘The Italian Job: L.A Heist’ (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube) which climbs 9 places from No19 to No10. The only other new entry in the All Formats Top 40 this week is Nintendo’s ‘Golden Sun 2: The Lost Age’ at No25.

Xbox-only Star Wars is No1 game in All Formats galaxy

15/Sep/2003
‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ (Xbox) from Lucasarts storms in to the No1 position in the All Formats Chart this week, ahead of Sony’s ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) which drops to No2.

In fact Lucasarts has the No1 title in both the Xbox and Gamecube charts thanks to the budget title ‘Star Wars: Rogue Leader’ (Gamecube) which moves up from No2 to No1. Despite the release of the PC version, SCI’s ‘The Great Escape’ (PS2, Xbox, PC) falls from No2 to No4. The only other new release to make it into the All Formats Top 10 is Sony’s sequel to the RPG ‘Dark Cloud’ called ‘Dark Chronicle’ (PS2). Both new releases in the All Formats Top 10 are in fact RPG titles. The only other new releases to make it into the Top 40 All Formats Chart are EA’s ‘Madden NFL 2004’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) which enters at No11 and Eidos’s film tie-in ‘The Italian Job: L.A Heist’ (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube) which debuts at No19. The highest climber is EA’s add-on ‘Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII’ (PC) which climbs from No30 to No24.

Symantec’s ‘Norton Antivirus 2004’ (PC) enters the chart at No16 after being launched 2 weeks ago. Pokemon can't catch 'em all - Eye Toy is No1 again

18/Aug/2003
Sony’s ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) is No1 in the All Formats Chart for a second time, jumping ahead of Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Ruby’ (Gameboy Advance) at No2 and ‘Pokemon Sapphire’ (Gameboy Advance) at No3.

The only significant change to the All Formats Top 10 is the entry of Symantec’s ‘Norton Antivirus 2003’ which climbs from No39 to No8 and Symantec’s ‘Norton Internet Security 2003’ which enters at No10, both entering the Top 10 for the first time more than 40 weeks after they were initially released. There are no other new entries in the All Formats Top 40 this week.

Pokemon dominates charts for third week

11/Aug/2003
Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Ruby’ (Gameboy Advance) is No1 in the All Formats Chart for a third week, while ‘Pokemon Sapphire’ (Gameboy Advance) holds on to the No2 position from Sony’s ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) which stays at No3.

There is little change in the All Formats Chart with the same 10 titles that were in last week’s Top 10 all staying in the Top 10 for a second week. The only new entry is EA’s console strategy title ‘Aliens Vs Predator: Extinction’ (PS2 and Xbox) entering the Charts at No12 and coming in at No1 in the Xbox Chart. The highest climber is SCI’s ‘Futurama’ (PS2 and Xbox) which is up 9 places from No31 to No22 in the All Formats Top 40.

Pokemon games hold on to No1 and No2

04/Aug/2003
Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Ruby’ (Gameboy Advance) is No1 in the All Formats Chart for a second week, while ‘Pokemon Sapphire’ (Gameboy Advance) holds on to the No2 position.

The budget PS2, Xbox and Gamecube versions of ‘FIFA 2003’ that were released last week have helped EA’s title jump from No13 to No5 in the All Formats Chart as well as claim the No1 position in the Xbox chart and No10 Gamecube chart. The release of the budget PS2, Gamecube and Xbox versions of EA’s ‘Medal of Honor: Frontline’ propel it from No17 to No6 in the All Formats Chart, while the PS2 Platinum versions of EA’s ‘Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ and ‘James Bond 007: Nightfire’ secure them both the No7 and No8 spot in the All Formats Chart respectively, giving EA 4 titles in the Top 10 - none of which are new releases. The only new releases in the All Formats Top 40 are Microsoft’s ‘Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight’ (PC) which enters at No20 and SCI’s ‘Futurama’ (PS2 and Xbox) which debuts at No31.

Tomb holds on to No1, safe from Sony's Eye Toy raid

14/Jul/2003
‘Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness’ (PS2 and PC) from Eidos is still No1 in the All Formats chart this week. Sony’s camera game ‘Eye Toy: Play’ (PS2) consolidates its place at No2 with a high rise in sales.

There is only one new release in the All Formats Top 40: Sony’s ‘Formula One 2003’ in at No31. Due to increased retailer promotional activity EA’s ‘James Bond 007: Nightfire’ (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Gameboy Advance and PC) re-enters the All Formats Top 10 at No10. Three weeks ago it was not even in the All Formats Top 40.

Sony's Socom knocks Matrix off No1 with Sony's Eye Toy due next week

30/Jun/2003
Sony has its first All Formats No1 since the launch of ‘The Getaway’ (PS2) at the beginning of the year. ‘Socom: US Navy Seals’ finally gets hold of the No1 spot, leaving Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) at No2.

There are 6 new releases in the All Formats Top 40 this week. The highest new entry is Codemasters’ ‘World Championship Snooker 2003’ (PS2, Xbox) which enters the chart at No10. The other new releases in the All Formats Top 40 are Koei’s ‘Dynasty Warriors 4’ (PS2) at No13, Microsoft’s ‘Midtown Madness 3’ (Xbox) at No14, EA’s ‘F1 Career Challenge’ (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube) at No24, THQ’s ‘Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick’ (PS2, Xbox) at No33 and finally Sega’s ‘Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut’ (Gamecube) at No35. With the release of the latest Harry Potter book this week, unsurprisingly the highest climber in the All Formats Chart is EA’s multi-format ‘Harry Potter – Chamber of Secrets’, up 14 places from No26 to No12. However Empire’s ‘Starsky & Hutch’ (PS2, Xbox and PC) also climbs well, up 7 places from No15 to No8.

What is 'Enter the Matrix'? All Formats No1 for a sixth week

23/Jun/2003
In the All Formats Chart Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) holds on to No1 for a sixth consecutive week, but only by the smallest of margins from Sony’s ‘Socom: US Navy Seals’ (PS2) at No2.

Microsoft has the highest new entry in the All Formats Chart with ‘Brute Force’ (Xbox) at No4. Vivendi’s ‘Hulk’ (PS2, Xbox, PC and Gamecube) climbs an impressive 4 places from No9 to No5, while Take 2’s ‘Midnight Club II’ (PS2, Xbox) is the highest climber in the All Formats Top 40, up 9 places from No15 to No 6, due to the release this week of the Xbox version. Other new releases in the All Formats Top 40 are Activision’s ‘Star Trek: Elite Force II’ (PC) at No13 and Empire’s ‘Starsky and Hutch’ (PS2, Xbox, PC) at No15. Activision have a re-entry at No11 with ‘Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix’ (Xbox, PC and Mac) – the Xbox version new this week.

Sony's online matrix can't topple Atari's multi-format giant

16/Jun/2003
Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, XBox, PC and Gamecube) is No1 for a fifth consecutive week in the All Formats Chart, despite the launch of Sony’s first PS2 online titles and network adaptor.

Sony’s PS2 online title ‘SOCOM: US Navy Seals’ is the highest new entry in the All Formats Chart, in at No2. The only other new release in the All Formats Top 40 is Vivendi’s ‘Hulk’ (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC) which comes in at No 9. Codemasters’ ‘Colin McRae Rally 3’ (PS2, Xbox and PC) re-enters the All Formats Top 40 at No20 with the launch this week of the PC version.

Matrix still No1 as Top 6 are all non-movers

09/Jun/2003
Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, XBox, PC and Gamecube) is No1 for a fourth consecutive week in the All Formats Chart. There is very little change in the All Formats Top 10 this week, with the first 6 titles all non-movers.

Activision’s ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection’ (PS2) is the only new release in the Top 40 All Formats Chart, in at No7. It is also the first Castle Wolfenstein title to be released on PS2. The highest climber in the Top 40 All Formats Chart is Konami’s ‘Dancing Stage Megamix’ (PS2), up 27 places from No40 to No13. Activision’s Xbox Castle Wolfenstein title, ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War’ moves from No17 to No 23, while Konami’s other dance title in the All Formats Top 40, ‘Dancing Stage Party Edition’ (PSX) is down two places from No12 to No14. THQ’s ‘Red Faction II’ re-enters the chart at No39 with the release of the Xbox, Gamecube and PC versions alongside the existing PS2 version. There are also new Gamecube and Gameboy Advance versions of Ubi Soft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’, joining the already released PS2 and Xbox versions. However ‘Splinter Cell’ doesn’t manage to climb, instead holding on to No6 in the All Formats Chart.

3rd week at No1 for 'Enter the Matrix'

02/Jun/2003
Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, XBox, PC and Gamecube) is No1 for a third consecutive week in the All Formats Chart. There is little movement among the other titles in the Top 10 with Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’ (Gamecube) re-entering the Top 10 at No9.

Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ (PS2 and PC) falls 2 places to No5 after the release of the PC version 3 weeks ago, while Ubi Soft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2, Xbox and PC) goes up 2 places to No6. There is only one new entry in the Top 40 All Formats Chart this week - Konami’s ‘Dancing Stage Megamix’ for PS2 at No40. EA’s array of Sims titles does especially well this week. In the All Formats Chart, EA’s ‘The Sims: Superstar’ holds strong at No2, while ‘The Sims’ (PC, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube) is up one place to No4. ‘The Sims: Unleashed’ also rises in the All Formats Chart, up from No30 to No23. This is even more remarkable when you look at the PC Full Price Chart, which this week has 5 ‘Sims’ titles in the Top 10 with both ‘The Sims: On Holiday’ and ‘The Sims: Hotdate’ re-entering the Top 10 at No8 and No9 respectively, both climbing 11 places.

No1 'Enter the Matrix' blows the wind out of Zelda

26/May/2003
Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, XBox, PC and Gamecube) holds firm at No1 for a second week in the All Formats Chart. There are 3 new entries in the Top 10 All Formats chart this week.

The highest new entry is EA’s add-on ‘The Sims: Superstar’ (PC) which comes in at No2. EA also have a new entry at No4 with the wrestling title ‘Def Jam Vendetta’ (PS2 and Gamecube). Konami are the only other publisher to have a Top 10 new entry this week with Silent Hill 3 (PS2) at No7. Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’ (Gamecube) drops out of the All Formats Top 10 and is also down one place to No2 in the Gamecube Top 20, having been replaced at No1 by Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’. Nintendo’s Zelda franchise is also knocked off the No1 spot in the Gameboy Advance Top 30 with ‘Zelda 3 – Link to the Past’ dropping to No2, being replaced at No1 by Konami’s ‘Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition’. The next highest PC new entries in the All Formats Top 40 this week are Microsoft’s ‘Rise of Nations’ at No25 and Ubi Soft’s online-only fps ‘Planetside’ at No36.

Atari's Enter the Matrix' is a 'neo' entry at No1

19/May/2003
Atari’s ‘Enter the Matrix’ (PS2, XBox, PC and Gamecube) is straight in at No1 in the All Formats chart for week 20 followed by Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ up to No2 from No9 thanks to the release of the PC version this week.

Rockstar/Take 2 also hold the No3 spot with ‘Midnight Club II’ (PS2) which was launched 2 weeks ago. There is a new entry at No4 with the XBox exclusive title ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War’ from Activision. Last week’s No1, Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’ (Gamecube) has to settle for No6 this week, while Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2, XBox and PC) is also down, from No3 to No7. The only other 2 new entries in the All Formats Top 20 this week are ‘Moto GP: Ultimate Racing Technology 2’ (XBox) from THQ in at No12 and the budget car (not wrestling) title ‘WWE Crush Hour’ (PS2 and Gamecube) which debuts at No16.

Zelda still in pole pole position with Burnout 2 No8 on starting grid

12/May/2003
There are only a few significant new releases for week 19. Acclaim’s ‘Burnout 2: Point of Impact’ (PS2) is joined by Xbox and Gamecube versions, which help it re-enter the Top 40 All Formats Chart at No8, as well as reach No1 in the Xbox chart ahead of Microsoft’s ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’ and enter the Gamecube chart at No2 behind Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’.

‘Zelda’ holds at No1 for a second week on the All Formats Chart, ahead of Rockstar/Take 2’s Midnight Club II (PS2) at No2 (from No3) and Ubi Soft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2) at No3 (from No2). Activision’s add-on ‘Medieval: Total War – Viking Invasion’ (PC) is the next highest new entry, coming in at No20 on the All Formats Chart and at No2 on the PC CD (Full Price) Chart.

Zelda No1 but can't outperform N64 Zelda's launch week

05/May/2003
Week 18 sees ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’ (GC) from Nintendo become the title with the 12th highest sales week ever (although not as big as Nintendo’s N64 ‘Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ which has the 9th highest sales week).

Needless to say, it occupies No1 in the All Formats chart, with another new entry, Take 2’s ‘Midnight Club II’ (PS2) in at No3. EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2, PC, Xbox and Gamecube) falls to No5 from No2, whilst despite the release of the X-Men 2 movie, Activision’s multi-format ‘X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge’ drops one place to No7.

Top 3 stay put while X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge claws into Top 10

28/Apr/2003
In week 17, the Top 3 in the All Formats chart remains the same.

Ubisoft are on top with ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2, PC and Xbox), EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2, PC, Xbox and Gamecube) stays at No2 and ‘Championship Manager 4’ (PC and Apple CD) from Eidos holds its position at No3. The biggest climber in the Top 10 is Activsion’s ‘X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge’ (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and GBA) which climbs from No11 to No6. The only other title to re-enter the Top Ten this week is Konami’s ‘Dancing Stage Party Edition’ (PSX), up from No12 to No8.

Splinter Cell has 2nd week at No1 - Potter re-enters Top 10

21/Apr/2003
Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2, PC and Xbox) stays at No1 in the All Formats chart for a second week, while ‘Championship Manager 4’ from Eidos (PC and Apple CD) drops to No3 and is replaced by EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2, PC, Xbox and Gamecube) at No2.

There are 3 significant new releases for week 16 with ‘Vietcong’ (PC) from Take 2 coming in at No10 and ‘X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge’ from Activision (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and GBA) entering the charts at No11. The third big new entry in the Top 40 is ‘Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition’ from Konami (GBA) which comes in at No36. EA’s ‘Harry Potter – Chamber of Secrets’ (PS2, PSX, GBA and PC) is up from No15 in the All Formats chart to No6 due to retailer promotion whereas ‘Devil May Cry 2’ from Capcom (PS2) is now out of the Top 10, down from No5 to No19.

Splinter Cell shoots Champ Manager and scores an All Formats No1

14/Apr/2003
‘Championship Manager 4’ from Eidos (PC and this week Apple CD) is no longer top of the All Software (All Formats) chart (now No2), having been overtaken by ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ PS2/XB/PC.

‘The Sims’ stays at No3. The only big new releases of the week in the All Formats chart are Sony’s ‘Primal’ (PS2) at No4 and Microsoft’s ‘Freelancer’ (PC), in at No7. There are now two Tom Clancy games in the Top 10 with ‘Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon’ rising 12 places to No10 due to significant retail price promotion.

PS2 Splinter Cell can't help knock Champ Manager off No1

07/Apr/2003
The All Software (All Formats) Top 40 sees Eidos’ PC ‘Championship Manager 4’ at No1 for a 2nd consecutive week.

Ubisoft remain at No2 thanks to PS2/XB/PC ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2 was new last week) and EA’s PS2/PC/XB/GC ‘The Sims’ climbs 4 places to No3 as XBox and Gamecube versions debut this week. Capcom drop one place to No4 with PS2 ‘Devil May Cry 2’ and Konami climb 3 places to No5 with PS2/XB/PC ‘Metal Gear Solid 2 – Substance’. Nintendo’s GBA ‘Zelda 3’ drops one place to No6, Sony’s PS2 ‘The Getaway’ climbs 4 places to No7 and Take 2’s PS2 ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ climbs 4 places to No8. Focus Multimedia enjoy some success with PC ‘Driving Test Success 2002/2003’ as the title rockets 30 places to No9 thanks to retail promotional activity. Novalogic’s PC ‘Delta Force: Black Hawk Down’ completes the Top 10, having debuted at No9 last week.

Biggest UK PC game launch week ever for 'Championship Manager 4'

31/Mar/2003
The All Software (All Formats) Top 40 sees Eidos’ PC ‘Championship Manager 4’ become the biggest ever PC release (double that of the last record-breaker on PC, ‘Championship Manager: Season 01/02) and No1 by a large margin.

The title has also become the third biggest product in the all time best ever sellers list (within a 7 day period), selling around 125,000 units through Chart-Track’s panel of retailers. To put this in perspective, the Top 2 are both huge PS2 titles - ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ and ‘The Getaway’. Ubisoft rise 11 places to No2 with PS2/XB/PC ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ (PS2 is new this week) and Capcom debut at No3 with PS2 ‘Devil May Cry 2’. Eidos’s PC/PSX ‘Championship Manager Quiz’ re-enters at No4 due to some promotional activity and Nintendo debut at No5 with GBA ‘Zelda 3 – Link To The Past’. Nintendo’s GC ‘Metroid Prime’ drops from No1 to No6 and EA’s PS2/PC ‘The Sims’ drops from No2 to No7. Konami re-enter at No8 with PS2/XB/PC ‘Metal Gear Solid 2 – Substance’ thanks to the new PS2 and PC versions launched this week. Novalogic debut at No9 with PC ‘Delta Force: Black Hawk Down’ and Ubisoft drop from No3 to No10 with PS2/XB/PC/GC/GBA ‘Rayman 3’. Also debuting this week is Lucasarts XB/PC ‘Indiana Jones & The Emperor’s Tomb’ (No13), Sega/Infogrames’ GBA ‘Sonic Advance 2’ (No16), Codemasters’ PS2/XB/PC ‘Toca Race Driver’, re-entry at No17 (new on XB & PC), Vivendi’s PS2/XB/PC ‘Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis’ (No20) and Microsoft’s XB ‘Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball’ (No23).

Metroid Prime gives Gamecube its second All Formats No1

24/Mar/2003
The All Software (All Formats) Top 40 sees a Gamecube title at No1 for only the second time since the format launched last year – Nintendo’s long-awaited and highly anticipated ‘Metroid Prime’ is No1 this week and the last time this happened was for the launch week of ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ back in October 2002.

EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2/PC) remains at No2 and Ubisoft climb 7 places to No3 with PS2/XB/GC/GBA/PC ‘Rayman 3’. Sony remain at No4 with PS2 ‘The Getaway’, Take 2 stay at No5 with PS2 ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ and EA drop 3 places to No6 with PS2/XB/GC/GBA ‘Lord Of the Rings – The Two Towers’. Activision fall from No1 to No7 with PS2 ‘Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven’, EA are No8 with the multi-format ‘FIFA 2003’, Midway’s ‘Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA) is No9 and EA take No10 with PC ‘Command And Conquer: Generals’. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven sneaks past big guns to claim top spot

17/Mar/2003
The All Software (All Formats) Top 40 sees Activision’s PS2 ‘Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven’ claiming No1, having debuted last week at No4.

EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2/PC) is now No2 after a 6 week unbroken run at the top of this Chart. However, EA bolster their assault on the top spot with ‘Lord Of the Rings – The Two Towers’ as the XBox and Gamecube versions debut this week – some 18 weeks after the PS2/GBA versions made their mark. Sony’s PS2 ‘The Getaway’ is No4, Take 2’s PS2 ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ is No5 and EA’s multi-format ‘FIFA 2003’ is No6. Midway’s ‘Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA) is No7 and Sega/Infogrames debut at No8 with Gamecube ‘Super Monkey Ball 2’. Capcom’s Gamecube ‘Resident Evil Zero’ drops from a debut position of No2 last week to No9 and Ubisoft climb 14 places to No10 with ‘Rayman 3’ – GBA/Gamecube versions debuted last week, joined this week by PS2 and XBox versions.

6 weeks of Sims at No1 denies valiant Resident Evil

10/Mar/2003
The All Software (All Formats) Top 40 sees EA’s ‘The Sims’ (PS2/PC) remaining at No1 for a sixth week, although pushed very hard by Capcom’s Gamecube ‘Resident Evil Zero’ which debuts at No2.

Midway’s ‘Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’ (PS2/XB/GC/GBA) drops 3 places to No5, Rockstar/Take 2 drop 2 places to No6 with PS2 ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’, Ubisoft drop one place to No7 with PC/XBox ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ and EA’s multi-format ‘FIFA 2003’ drops one place to No8. EA’s PC ‘Command And Conquer: Generals’ is down 4 places to No9 and Konami’s PSX ‘Dancing Stage Party Edition’ is down 2 places to No10. The third biggest new entry this week is Konami’s XBox ‘Metal Gear Solid 2 – Substance’ debuting at No13 (PS2 & PC versions are due by the end of this month). The fourth biggest new entry is right behind at No14 – Sega/Infogrames’ Gamecube ‘Sonic Mega Collection’ (featuring 7 classic Sonic titles from the Megadrive era). Also of note is the fifth biggest new release: marking the debut of Gamecube online gaming this week is the first title to support internet-ready Gamecube owners – ‘Phantasy Star Online: Episodes 1 & 2’, originally released on Sega’s Dreamcast.

The Sims continues to stop a Mortal Kombat victory

03/Mar/2003
